Bladder Tank For Water Well Pump
A bladder tank (well expansion tank) is part of a water well pump system. It is a storage tank for water. The tank has pressurized air in the top half and stores well water in the bottom half. It is essential to the proper function of a well pump.
Expansion Tank Operation
When a bladder tank is properly installed and calibrated a well pump will deliver a continual smooth flow of water. The pump will cycle on and off as it fills the bladder tank. This on-and-off cycle allows the pump to rest while the water is still running. A properly calibrated bladder tank will increase pump longevity. If a bladder tank has low pressure the water flow will be much stronger when the pump is on. It will be much weaker when the pump is off. A person taking a shower should notice a strong to weak cycle in the water flow if a tank has low pressure. To preserve and protect the pump this issue should be addressed.
Bladder Tank Failure. Repair Bladder Expansion Tank
A bladder tank fails when the internal diaphragm (or bladder) ruptures. If the tank fails the water flow will pulse when water is dispensed. The pressure switch will quickly cycle on and off. This will produce a pulsing effect on the water flow. When a bladder tank fails it needs to be replaced immediately. Without a properly functioning well expansion tank, a pump will fail. To protect the pump, replace the bladder expansion tank.
