Broken Toilet Flange Repair

A toilet that moves is most often sitting on a broken toilet flange. A toilet flange (also called a closet flange) is part of the rough waste piping in a sanitary drainage system. The drain outlet of the toilet connects to the flange. The flange seals to the bottom of the toilet with a wax ring. I screw the toilet flange to the subfloor to create a secure mount. I bolt the toilet to the flange with closet bolts. When correctly installed the toilet will have a long-lasting watertight seal.

Plastic drain piping can get brittle with age. If the flange cracks or breaks there will be movement and the water-tight seal will fail. When this happens it is time for a toilet flange repair.

The above two photos illustrate before and after pictures of a toilet flange repair.

Toilet Flange Installation
The bottom of the toilet flange should be flush with the finished floor. One simple way to set a toilet flange at the proper height is to install it directly on top of the finished floor. Some floors like porcelain tile are extremely difficult to drill through. In which case the tile is typically laid to the perimeter of the flange. Next, I place a shim under the flange to raise it to the correct level. In this way, the bottom of the flange sits at the same level as the top of the finished floor.
