Pressure Switch

A pressure switch is one part of the control system of a residential potable water well. It turns the pump on and off. You can find it installed in the water piping near the bladder expansion tank.

How It Works

A diaphragm in the switch senses the water pressure. When the pressure drops to the low-pressure threshold the switch closes and sends power to the pump. When the pressure rises to the high-pressure threshold the switch opens shutting off the pump. Pressure switches are available with different low and high limit presets. Keep in mind, the depth of the well, the size of the pump, motor, and The GPM (gallons per minute) the well produces dictate the pressure attainable in the well pump system. This means, to correctly size a pressure switch you need to take into consideration the pump, motor, water piping, electrical, pressure switch, and bladder expansion tank.
