Anti-freeze Hose Faucet
A hose faucet goes by many names. Hose spigot, hose bibb, Sillcock, anti-freeze hydrant, or frost-free hose spigot. A Frost-free type of hose faucet is considered to be standard by most plumbers. It has been available to install my entire career. It has a long stem. At the rear of this stem are the washer and seat. When installed the rear of the long shaft is inside the crawlspace or home. Therefore, it is protected from freezing.
Freeze Damage
If you leave your hose attached during cold weather then freeze damage is likely. When temperatures drop below freezing water trapped in the body of the hose faucet can freeze and expand. The expansion of the water during freezing will burst the body of the hose bibb. Disconnect your garden hoses and residual water will drain automatically from the body of a properly installed anti-freeze hydrant.
Woodford Hose Faucet
Pros: Higher Quality. Better Longevity. Parts are available for rebuild or repair. A Woodford Hose Faucet has a high-quality solid cast stem
Cons: Increased Cost
Generic Hose Faucet
Pros: Cost Less
Cons: Lower Quality. Tends to get stiff and hard to turn with age. Replacement parts are typically not available. A Generic Hose Faucet has a low-quality stamped or pressed stem.
Hose Faucet Freeze Damage FAQ
Water leaks from the split in the body of the hose faucet. In most cases, it only leaks when it is turned on. It can leak down the foundation on the inside, outside, or both depending on where the faucet has burst.
Yes, with the hose removed the residual water trapped in the hose faucet body can drain.
Yes, If water is trapped in the body it can freeze and split.
