Plumbing valves are mechanical devices that can fail. Your residential water system has a variety of plumbing valves.  You need a plumbing valve repair when your valve fails.

Main Shut-off Valve

Your home should have a main shut-off valve.  There are three common locations for this valve:

  • Just inside the crawlspace door.
  • In a closet in your home. Often this is a coat closet near the front door.  Less often in a pantry or other closet.
  • In the ground in a valve box where your water service piping penetrates your foundation.
  • If you have an older home you may have a valve that you need to crawl across the crawlspace to where the water service enters the crawlspace.  This location is not convenieant nor does it satisfy the current NC Plumbing code as an acceptable location for a main shut off valve.
  • If you have a private well you should find your main shut off valve at the Bladder Expansion Tank and Pressure Switch.

Water heater input shut-off valve.

You can turn off the cold-water supply to your water heater with the valve installed at the cold-water inlet. You then can perform repairs and maintenance on the water heater or hot-water system.

Angle Stop Valves and Straight Stop Valves

  • You will find cold water angle stop valves coming out of the wall behind your toilet on the left-hand side just above the floor.  You can use this valve to turn off the water supply to the toilet for rebuilding or repair.
  • You will find cold-water and hot-water angle stop valves comming out of the wall about a foot below a bathroom faucet or kitchen faucet.  You can repair and rebuild your faucets when you turn off these valves.

Hose Faucet isolation valves.

You can find these valves inside the crawlspace where the hose faucet supply piping enters the siding or foundation.  You can shut off a hose faucet for the cold season and drain it of residual water. These valves are not as common but are a fantastic way to prevent needing a hose faucet plumbing valve repair or replacement due to freeze damage.

Specialty Valves

Pressure Reducing Valve.

Your home should have a pressure reducing valve (PRV) if your water supply is furnished by a municipality or a  community well.  If you have low pressure, high pressure or low flow you may need a pressure reducing valve plumbing repair.

Double Check Valve

Johnston County Water Service Code Requirements.

A municipal water service in Johnston County will have a main shut-off valve and a double check valve in a valve box next to the meter box.

Ice Maker Hook-up

A valve box in the wall to supply water to your ice maker.

Wash Machine Hook-up

A valve box in the wall to supply hot and cold water to your clothes washer.  It also provides an outlet for your clothes washer waste standpipe.
