Why I Install A Moen Posi-Temp Shower Valve
There are many good products on the market. In this post, I chose to install the Moen Posi-Temp 2520 pressure balance shower valve. One reason is Moen’s warranty support. Over the years, Moen has provided me with the best warranty support. Another reason is that model 2520 is a copper connection valve. It is sweat together with a torch and solder. I believe this is the best way to install a shower valve. A final reason is that Moen manufactures a cartridge puller for this valve. If you want to rebuild an old valve the cartridge puller is a helpful tool when removing the cartridge.
Fit-Up To Install Moen Posi-Temp Shower Valve
I fit up this valve with copper fittings, a torch, and solder.
Fit-Up Hot Water & Cold Water Inputs
I like to use PEX shower elbows to adapt the inputs to the supply piping. They are pre-made copper sweep Ells with a PEX fitting on one end and a copper connection on the other. In this installation, I could not center the shower valve with two sweep ells because a stud was in the way. That is why the hot side is fed by a PEX sweat adapter and a copper street 90.
Fit-Up The Tub Spout Outlet To Install A Moen Posi-Temp Shower Valve
I plugged the bottom tub spout outlet with a copper torpedo cap for the installation of this Moen Posi-Temp shower valve. If this was a tub/shower combination instead of a shower then this outlet would not be capped but would supply the tub spout.
Fit-Up The Shower Riser
The shower riser is the tube from the shower valve to the showerhead. I make my shower riser with copper and a drop ear ell. The drop ear ell is the brass fitting at the top. It is a 1/2″ female 90 with screw mounting tabs to secure it. This is the outlet for the shower head. I then thread a temporary galvanized nipple and cap into the drop-ear ell. Once the tile is installed in the shower I can remove this nipple and install the shower head.
